Hi all,

sorry for this urgent request, but I'm in need of a native speaker who could take a quick look at my cover letter for a medical clerkship in Japan. It's not necessary to haven an absolutely flawless letter, but it would be great if we could eliminate at least the biggest grammar mistakes and everything else which sounds "weird" in your ears. Thanks soooooo much!!

Ok, here we go:

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is *** *** and I am a medical student in my 2nd clinical year at in . I am writing you to express my interest in a one-month clinical clerkship at your hospital.

After graduation from highschool I started studying at medical school of in in May 2000. During the preclinical part of my studies we were trained in the basic medical sciences, such as biology, chemistry, physics, medical psychology, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy.

After having successfully passed the German preclinical medical exam, “Physikum”, in March 2004, I continued with the clinical part of my studies, which includes a wide variety of courses and clinical trainings in almost all medical fields. In my 1st clinical year I have successfully completed courses in pathological physiology, microbiology and immunology, general pathology, general radiology, clinical genetics, pharmacology, clinical chemistry, biometrics and medical statistics, psychosomatic medicine, occupational medicine, palliative medicine, and internal medicine. Following my courses in internal medicine I also did a one-month clerkship in the gastroenterology department of the Hospital *** in March 2005, which gave me with a deep insight into current medical practice. Thereby this clerkship provided me not only with the opportunity to enhance my medical knowledge, but also to learn various practical skills.

The curriculum of my current semester comprises courses, lectures, and trainings in all surgical disciplines. During summer term 2005 I actively participated on the wards, in the operating threatres, and outpatient clinics of my university’s hospitals. Having just passed an intensive course in orthopaedics I would be glad to get the chance to deepen my knowledge in the orthopaedic field and gain more practical experience. After finishing university I aspire to a residency in orthopaedic surgery. I hope to gain as many diverse experiences in this field as possible. In order to be able to assess the effectiveness, the advantages and disadvantages of medical procedures in my later professional life and finally be able to improve medical care in a German hospital it is vital to have experienced and participated in health care in a different and foreign surrounding. A clerkship at your hospital would provide me with an excellent opportunity to get these experiences.

Nowadays, as modern countries around the world often face similar challenges e.g. regarding ageing societies and financing of health and social care, it is also of great interest to compare different strategies to solve these problems. I consider it to be very satisfying to get in touch with experienced and also young physicians from different cultural backgrounds and discuss medical topics, education, public health issues as well as research. It is enriching for both sides to strengthen the contacts between physicians in different countries. I am also keen to immerse in a completely different work and life style.

Regarding the language, I plan to take an intensive language course at my university next semester, which will provide me with at least a basic knowledge. Furthermore I will do two clerkships in orthopaedic surgery during summer break 2005, in order to get the best possible preparation for a clerkship abroad.

Thank you very much for considering my application. I am looking forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

*** ***
