You are studying English at a private language school attended by many international students. You are planning a surprise birthday party for a friend who has been feeling particularly sad and homesick. Write to another classmate and invite him / her to the party. In your letter:
  • explain the reason for the party
  • give the date and time of the party
  • suggest what the classmate could bring to the party

Dear John,

How is it going? I am writing this letter to let you know about a surprise party that I would like to hold it for Peter. As you know, Peter failed in the Math exam last week and he is very upset now. I thought that it would be great idea if I make him happy in this way.

I planned to hold this party on Peter's birthday on June 18, 2011. Peter will come to school at 8 am every day. So I think that we should attend to school before him at 7 am. We should prepare many things for the party as fast as we can.

Finally, We will need some meals, drinks and balloons for this party. So, I think that all classmates could bring some things with themselves. We could write all required items on a paper and then everyone select one item.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best,

Bob.

Dear akm2446,

This was a very good effort but I have made some suggestions in a new edition of your letter below. Take care to follow the instructions more closely. You may have misunderstood the fifth and final requirement concerning the content of your letter. You were required to suggest what the classmate (not classmates) could bring to the party.

Finally, the instructions for your letter should have told you to include where the surprise party would be held. I have added this for you.

Regards, JohnParis

Dear John,

How is it going?

I am writing this letter to let you know about a surprise party that I would like to hold for Peter. As you know, he failed his Math exam last week and is very upset. I was thinking that a surprise party might cheeer him up.

The party will be on Peter's birthday at 8 a.m. June 18, 2011 in room 212 of the general classroom building. Please try to be at school no later than 7 a.m. because we will need help setting up.

Finally, would it be possible for you to bring a box of baloons (a bottle of juice, some cookies, etc.) as your contribution?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best,

Bob.
