IELTS writing task 2

6. In the world of the internet, people write product reviews of products and services. Do you
think this is a positive or negative development?

Essay:

In the world of the internet, there has been a great trend in the e-commerce sector; increasingly there are a lot of commercial websites and applications that are selling goods and services online. They enable customers to explore different types of products and pay for them smoothly. Furthermore, after the sale process is over, clients get the opportunity to type their reviews of the products and services that were served. Many think of it as a positive development. I totally agree for several reasons.

Firstly, product reviews enhance authenticity by giving great help to other customers in making a decision on whether to buy a certain item. They provide them with further information about the product they are looking to buy. For instance, if you want to buy an item from Amazon and you were puzzled about what to choose between many options. Reading the reviews and opinions of the previous buyers will help you decide what meets your needs because those comments provide more details about the product.

Secondly, it increases customer satisfaction which generates what is called in marketing "loyal customers". As we know, people differ in their opinions, so their feedback will vary between negative and positive comments; it is very likely to find criticism as well as the praise on the service provided. When a customer orders an item and finds out that the product they order every time is compatible with what is mentioned on the website, they will keep buying from the same seller until they become "loyal customers". Thus, the seller will make more earnings.

In conclusion, reviews of the products and services have a positive impact on both, the customers and sellers. As for the customers, it helps them to decide what to buy and increases their satisfaction. As for the sellers, it enhances the authenticity of their websites which create "loyal customers".

Note:

This type of question doesn't give two views, then ask me to discuss both and state mine. It was asking whether I think something is positive or negative. So what I understand is that If I say positive, I state my view and talk about the reasons and vice versa. That's my understanding of the question.

Thank you

Right, but you can always say “mostly positive/negative”, if you wish, that is!

Some initial comments:

1- Your introduction needs to change radically. It needs to say right at the start that the topic is online customer reviews.

2- Your second body paragraph is vague. I suggest you think of a different idea. Perhaps make the first body paragraph about the benefits to customers, and the second one about benefits to companies. Or maybe agree partially that it is a positive development, write a first body paragraph about the limitations of online reviews, and then counter with a longer paragraph about the benefits. In any case, you definitely need to change that second body paragraph.

Revise and post below.

Thank you very much for the notes. I'll reconsider it.

Hi, here is the new version:

In the world of the internet, online customer reviews are seen as a positive development because they play a significant role in promoting e-commerce. People can submit their own reviews of products and services online, which would help in marketing promotion and increasing purchases. I partially agree; as there are pros to the online customer review, there are cons as well.

On the one hand, too many negative reviews from the previous buyers have an impact on the credibility of the business owner. For instance, when a certain product looks good in the picture and has several features in the description box of the website, but almost all reviews on it from the previous buyers come negative. That normally would discourage a potential buyer from making a purchase decision. Moreover, when such regard gets repeated, the reputation of certain brands and the business owner will be affected accordingly.

On the other hand, online customer reviews provide free, powerful advertising. Customers who were satisfied with the purchase would leave positive reviews and opinions about the goods. Thus, more customers would be encouraged to buy from the website, which would play as a free advertisement. The last one contributes significantly to the success of any business.

In conclusion, while online customer reviews have their cons that could impact the credibility of the business, they have many advantages such as playing as a free, strong advertisement and increasing potential buyers for purchase. As a result, they can contribute to the success of the business.

In the world of the internet, online customer reviews [ 1] are seen as a positive development because they play a significant role in informing customers and promoting e-commerce. People can submit their own reviews of products and services online, which others read and react or respond to, thus helping to create a virtual profile for the item in question. would help in marketing promotion and increasing purchases. Many claim that this is a major milestone and positive development in online commercial activity. I partially agree with that. ; as there are pros to the online customer review, there are cons as well.[ 2]

[ 3] On the one hand, too many negative reviews from the previous buyers have an impact on the credibility of the business owner. [ 4]

[ 2]: Avoid using the words “pros” and “cons” in IELTS writing. They are not very formal.

[ 3]: That paragraph is missing a topic sentence. For example,

On the one hand, online customer reviews are not without limitations.

That is not a useful argument. If a product or service is poor, and online reviews expose that, then that is a good thing!

You really need to think (brainstorm) and come up with useful ideas before you embark on writing your essay. Let’s try doing that here.

Benefits of online customer reviews

- Inform customers about quality/features

- Helps companies market/promote their products

-

Limitations of online customer reviews

- May not always be accurate

- Unfair malicious reviews can disadvantage a company

-

Try adding one more point to each list (if you can), then turn these lists into body paragraphs. Forget about the introduction and conclusion for now. You can use the topic sentence I suggested above for one of your paragraphs. Post below.

Thank you very much for your useful notes. Regarding 3, I just want to clarify my point there.

teechrThat is not a useful argument. If a product or service is poor, and online reviews expose that, then that is a good thing!

I totally agree. That's not what I meant there. I mean when a certain product looks good in the picture on the commercial website and has several features mentioned in the description box, but the reviews about it from the previous buyers came almost poor and negative (in contrast to the description mentioned on the website).

That would affect the credibility of the website. In other terms, customers would consider it cheating. They would take a bad impression of the website and its owner. If the reputation of the website got bad, no one would buy.

In fact, before starting to write, I was thinking of adding several benefits, but then I stopped because as I remember in your previous responses, you had mentioned that each paragraph should deal with only one point/idea. So, in each paragraph, we need to mention a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and example sentences.

Therefore, I was thinking that if I added several benefits and talk about each one on its own, my essay would definitely be lengthy, and it would exceed the maximum number for task 2.

Ok, I'll do that in the next reply.

I appreciate your effort. Thank you.

Yes, I am. I didn't notice that I wasn't logged in until I submitted my response.

MoonriseI totally agree. That's not what I meant there. I mean when a certain product looks good in the picture on the commercial review website ...

I think you may have a useful point there.

Not always easy to decide which review websites are trustworthy.

MoonriseIn fact, before starting to write, I was thinking of adding several benefits, but then I stopped because ...

A paragraph about the benefits has one main theme (benefits/advantages) but can have several sub-points (list of benefits). And yes, you do need to filter your ideas and select the best ones, so as not to go over the word limit.

Moonrise

Okay/OK, I'll do that in the next reply.

And you might want to include that new point (that you raised above) in it.
