One of the consequences of improved medical care is that people are living longer and life expectancy is increasing. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

These days, it seems that better quality healthcare is the main reason for people living longer and lifespan extension. Although there are several advantages of this development, I believe that they are outweighed by the disadvantages.

On the one hand, it seems to me that there are undeniable merits of enhanced and improved life expectancy. First of all, the aged possess wisdom, which is the thing that can only be obtained by accumulating life experience. Thanks to that, the younger generations could be transmitted traditions, family values, and extensive knowledge. In addition, if people can live longer, they will have much more spare time to enjoy their lives after spending years working or bringing up their families. More specifically, having a longer retirement enables the old to have more opportunities for recreational pursuits, assuming they have enough health and money.

On the other hand, I argue that the drawbacks of this trend would prove to be more important. Firstly, in many countries, governments are struggling to provide pensions, medical care, and financial support for the elderly, especially retirees who have stopped working and cannot make a financial contribution to society. When the number of the ageing population rises, not only does the budget that the government must provide for them grow, but the need for nursing homes and caring centers will also be much higher. Secondly, increasing life expectancy or an ageing population could lead to a lack of labor force. This has created an enormous financial burden, and governments have to face up the shortage of young workers who are the main workforce of the country.

In conclusion, while this development has both negative and positive effects on human life, I am convinced that the downsides outweigh the benefits.
