People think that government should increase the cost of fuel for cars and other vehicles to solve environmental problems. Give your opinions.Answer People believe that the rise of the price of petrol is one of the solutions to reduce environmental problems. While I consider that this might be an effective measure, I would argue that the other measures might have an even greater impact. If national authorities raised taxes on petrol, this would effect to two environmental issues. Firstly, in terms of private cars, motorists would limit the number and length of their journeys to compensate for the extra expense. Governments would then forced to upgrade and expand public transport provision, as people would still need to travel to work, to school or to shops and hospitals, for example. Secondly, from the perspective of freight services, more goods would have to be transported by rail rather than by truck. Both these measures would cut down on emissions from vehicles and help to reduce the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, while this rise in fuel prices might be useful stopgap measure, governments could adopt transport policies which would be more effective in the long term. The local authorities in London, for instance, introduced a congestion charge on all vehicles visiting the city center. They use the money raised to subsidize the cost of fares and to invest in transport infrastructure. In turn, this has improved the air quality in the city, as a result of the reduction in exhaust fumes. Another policy would be to introduce free bus and train passes, as the increased use of public transport would reduce pollution from private cars and help in the effort to combat global warming. In conclusion, a sharp rise in petrol prices would be a useful environmentally-friendly transport measure, although in the longest term other steps would be more effective.

I stopped here because the ideas you express in the rest of your essay do not support the position you’ve taken above. Based on that position, you need to write two body paragraphs: one about the drawbacks of increasing the price of petrol, and a second paragraph about alternative solutions. At this stage, I just want you to jot down some ideas and put them in the two lists below. Do not write flowing text and do not worry too much about grammar. Just write concise points.

Drawbacks/disadvantages of raising petrol prices:

Alternative solutions to tackle environmental problems:

Think of some ideas and post the two lists below. Do not write paragraphs for now; just fill in those two lists.

Thank you. I'll try to think some ideas and post them later.

Drawbacks of raising petrol prices:

1. Increase the cost of transportation

2. Affect the cost of production which relies on machine powered by petrol.

3. Reduce the poor's standard of living due to high prices of essential commodities.

Alternative solutions to tackle environmental problems:

1. Invest in renewable energy production such as wind and tidal power or solar power

2. Encourage people to use public transportation, restrict private vehicles in order to minimize exhaust and fume emissions

3. Recycle rubbish or materials.

Very good. Now, we're ready to write the body paragraphs.
