The rapid change in the global environment with its climate, demographics and economic systems made me acutely aware of these processes. There is an urgent need to develop concepts on how people can contribute to a better understanding of global change and adapt to these challenges, so that the sustainable land use and adaptive management with the knowledge of conservation biology, vegetation ecology and biodiversity including ecosystem functions and services may be strengthened while simultaneously improving their quality of life and raising awareness of environmental protection for communities. In order to realize these aspirations and arrive at a deep comprehension of the role of ecosystem and biodiversity research for sustainable management, I strongly feel the need to pursue advanced research in this field.

My scientific and professional aims include becoming a career research specialist in sustainable land and resource management in order to benefit agriculture, land use and farmers, both locally and worldwide, as well as thousands of rice farmers in Thailand who are affected by unprecedented global change resulting in an increasing number of land abandonment and the changes of species-rich vegetation covering the ground. Growing up on a rice farm in a small village in northeastern Thailand made me acutely aware of this.

Due to the rapid change in the global environment with its climate, demographics and economic systems, there is an urgent need to develop concepts on how people can contribute to a better understanding of global change and adapt to these challenges, so that the sustainable land use and adaptive management with the knowledge of landscape ecology and biodiversity including ecosystem functions and services may be strengthened while simultaneously improving their quality of life and raising awareness of environmental protection for communities. In order to realize these aspirations and arrive at a deep comprehension of the role of social-ecological research for sustainable management in the current challenging global transformation, I strongly feel the need to pursue advanced research in this field.

I have a great interest in conservation and global change biology, vegetation and landscape ecology, and forest ecology and management. Therefore, I participated and practiced in several subjects during my master´s degree in the Ecology Center at the University of Kiel, such as Nutrient Cycle and Sustainability, Geo-Ecological Regional Processes, Forest Economics, Ecosystem Analysis, Vegetation Ecology, GIS & Modelling, Ecosystem Protection & Management, Long Term Development of Landscapes, and Ecological Indicator. I further conducted my master’s thesis in the field of forest management. In this study I evaluated the forest certification systems used in Thailand by comparing them to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). I also investigated potential improvements to these systems. This research indicates clearly that Thailand still lacks skilled human resources and also needs to improve its organizational management and environmental policy.
