this is a part of an e-mail to a university, asking about a course.
please edit it.thanks!

Although I have studied mathematics, I have a strong interest in European Studies.
That’s why I am thinking of applying for the MA European Studies at Sussex University.
I would like to know if it's necessary to have a relevant first degree and which are my chances to be accepted, since I don’t have the appropriate background.
I hope that I will be given the opportunity to try and prove my knowledge and skills.
Although I have studied mathematics (be specific -- do you mean you have BS in Math?), I have a strong interest in European Studies.
That’s why I *want to apply (more straight forward) for the MA European Studies at Sussex University.

I would like to know if it's necessary to have a relevant first degree; and since I don't have the appropriate background (move it up), *what chances I have of being accepted into the program. (are you a good student? build your case)

I hope that I will be given the opportunity to *prove my knowledge and skills (elaborate. How does your background and skills help?).
very helpful! thank you very much.
