How will the proposed study contribute to your career?
My lifelong goal is to impact my community by offering mental health services to all young people, especially post-lingual deaf, who struggle with severe mental disorders while training Psychology students in Ghana to become highly professional and skilled fellows for the field.
After my master’s degree, I plan to practice as a Clinical Psychologist in a university community with my focus being more on the deaf community. I have worked closely with the deaf and I am privy to the prevalence and higher susceptibility to mental disorders, especially among post-lingual deaf people since they have tasted the beauty of sound.
I intend to combine my skill in Ghanaian Sign language and Clinical Psychology to help the deaf who patronage mental health services through direct communication with them without the need for an interpreter. This will greatly improve patronage as some deaf rarely visit the Psychologist because they find it difficult to discuss sensitive issues greatly impeding their mental health in the presence of an interpreter (who is mostly a relative or friend).
This degree will be a huge step toward achieving my goal of becoming a Psychology Professor in the long term. With the masters degree, I will be able to pursue a Ph.D. in the same field. I plan on combining clinical practice, research, and teaching in the field of Psychology.
