A guy is driving and pulls up to a street in a big city to pick up his friend who stands waiting for him. The friend is smoking a cigarette while doing so. How can I describe this? It should be described from the guy in the car's perspective. And should be something like this:

He pulled up to a sidewalk/in a street where his friend stood waiting, smoking a cigarette.

I don't even know if "pulled up" is the correct term. Or if you say "pulled up to a sidewalk" or "pulled up in a street" or something else. Please help me out. I appreciate it.

You might say, for example:

He spotted his friend standing on a side street smoking a cigarette and pulled up to the curb to pick him up.
