Some people argue that young children should start mainstream education at a very early age while others believe that in this period, play is more important than academic learning. I totally agree with the latter point of view. In my opinion, entering formal schools too early could do more harm than good for the development of children.

Firstly, early formal schooling could hinder the development of the brain of young children. Scientifically, this is the time when brain cells are developing so they cannot handle too many things. Forcing children to learn literacy and numeracy quite early could lead to frustration and interfere with their love of learning. Hence, many experts recommend that we should delay formal education until children are interested and ready.

Secondly, unlike older children, young kids are particularly keen on learning through play. A play-based environment provides numerous opportunities for children to use their creativity to develop their imagination and dexterity. Since there is no right or wrong during free play, young kids can create various things without fear. At home, my nephew’s real joy is assembling Lego pieces to build up anything he wants like planes or firefighters. In addition, playing also improves their social skills as well as develops their confidence. It is through play that children at a very early age engage in and interact with the world around them. They create and explore the world they master, communicating with other people and conquering their fear while practicing adult roles. Moreover, when play is allowed to be child-driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue.

In conclusion, I believe that accessing formal education too early is not helpful for young children since at this age, they are more beneficial by learning through play than absorbing instructional knowledge at schools.
