Essay:

Many people believe that the conservative ideology of the old generations is of no value to today’s young people. While I understand that there are still many valuable lessons that teenage people can learn from their forefathers, I am inclined to the statement that traditions of the past bear little relevance to the lifestyle and behavior of the present.

To begin with, teenagers should foster some traditional norms and values as they are still beneficial and useful to modern life. For example, our forefathers place great importance on some moral qualities such as being hard-working, courageous, and respectful. Youngsters have to show their appreciation and respect for their parents and family. These qualities can set the basis for ethical behavior and enable the young to see the world around them more thoroughly.

Nonetheless, I would argue that many ideas of the past are outdated and hold little value to the young generations. First, the conventional ideology of the older generations related to the role of men and women is not applicable in this day and age. In the past, men had the highest status in the family and had absolute authority over the household. Whereas, women had limited rights and often received less education than men. In the family, women depended on their husbands and had the responsibility of taking care of children. These fixed roles are no longer reasonable in the modern era when gender equality is promoted worldwide. Second, the way of living in the past has become rather rare in the modern world. Teenagers in the past tend to live in a nuclear family which consists of three generations. However, youngsters nowadays opt for leading an independent life as this lifestyle provides them with more freedom and builds up their confidence and self-reliance.

In conclusion, although some of the past values are still advantageous, I believe that teenagers should think carefully before adopting these beliefs.
