Topic:

The chart shows the results of surveys in one African country asking teenagers the main reasons for using their phones between 2016 and 2019.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

My essay:

The pie chart represents the main reasons for teenagers using their phones in years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 in one African country.

Overall, the chart depicts that the most common reason for using phone was social networks and the least common reason was phone call among teenagers for using their phones in all the four years.

In the year 2016, the usage of social networks on the phone was 50%, whereas phone calls was 10%. Social networks witnessed a decrease by 2%, while phone call increased by 3% in the year 2017.

In both the years 2018 and 2019, the proportion of social networks usage was more than half, while phone calls observed a significant decrease from 11% in 2018 to almost half in 2019. Other categories which are email and digital camera together constituted to 40% in 2016, whereas there was drop of 1% in the year 2017 and remained constant for the two consecutive years.

The pie chart (It is important to write an accurate report. There is not one pie chart. There are four pie charts!) represents (wrong verb) the main reasons for teenagers using their phones in years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 in one African country. (Your description is not complete. You did not mention the categories on the pie charts. )

Overall, the chart (There are four of them. Which one are you writing about?) depicts that the most common reason for using phone was social networks and the least common reason was phone call (wrong form) among teenagers for using their phones (Redundant and repetitive. Delete) in all the four years.

In the year 2016, the usage of social networks on the phone was 50%, (50% of what? Total usage? What is the "whole" for this pie chart? ) whereas phone calls was 10%. Social networks witnessed (incorrect usage. wrong word Networks do not witness anything. Read my advice. ) a decrease by 2%, while phone call increased by 3% in the year 2017.

In both the years 2018 and 2019, the proportion of social networks usage (poor English) was more than half, while phone calls observed (Phone calls do not have eyes. The cannot see or observe anything.) a significant decrease from 11% in 2018 to almost half (Almost half is about 50%. That is incorrect.) in 2019. Other categories which are email and digital camera together (That is one category? You never listed all the categories, so the reader is very confused.) constituted to (wrong word) 40% in 2016, whereas there was drop of 1% in the year 2017 and remained constant for the two consecutive years. (There are three choices,: 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. Which "two consecutive years" do you mean?)

How to write a "survey response" Task 1 essay.

First, ask yourself: what was the survey?

You need to understand the survey in order to report the survey results.

Topic: The chart shows the results of surveys in one African country asking teenagers the main reasons for using their phones between 2016 and 2019.

In this case, this survey had one question and four check boxes.

The question was: "What function do you use on your phone the most?"

The check boxes were "social networking", "emailing", taking pictures" and "phone calling". Each person could pick only one check box.

The pie chart then shows the percentage of the respondents that picked each category. The total percentage adds up to 100%.

After you have figured out the survey, then you can write the introduction paragraph.

Here are four different ways to write it. The first one is the shortest.

Opening paragraph #1

The four pie charts, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, break down the primary usage of mobile phones reported by teenagers in an African country. They had to pick one of four choices: social networking, email, phone calls and taking photos.

Opening paragraph #2

The pie charts show the results of four surveys of teenagers of an African country concerning the primary way they use their mobile phones. Surveys were done each year between 2016 and 2019, and participants could choose one from these four categories: social networking, email, phone calls and taking photos.

Opening paragraph #3

A survey was conducted each year between 2016 and 2019, of teenagers in an African country, asking them for the single most important use of their mobile phone. They had four options: social networking, email, phone calls and taking photos. The pie charts show the percentages for each option.

Opening paragraph #4

The pie charts compare the responses from a questionnaire asking teenagers in an African country what the primary use of their mobile phone was. Each participant could pick one of these: social networking, email, phone calls and taking photos. Results were compiled annually from 2016 to 2019.

Here is a sample for the two body paragraphs (after the opening paragraph.)

Overall, about three-quarters mainly used their phones for either social networking or email. And the majority of participants selected social networking, except in 2017, when it was slightly less. Making phone calls was consistently the least chosen option.

In detail, taking photos became more popular, rising from 15%, or third place, in 2016 to 20%, second place, in 2019. Making phone calls had the opposite trend. Declining from one in ten in 2016 to one in twenty in 2019, it consistently ranked in last place. Exchanging emails also dropped marginally from a quarter to 19%. The most frequently chosen category was social networking, ranging from a low of 48% in 2017 to its maximum of 56% in 2019.
