Prison is a common way in most countries to solve the problem of crime. However, a more effective solution is to provide people with a better education. Do you agree or disagree?

In order to eliminate crime, some people believe that imprisonment is the effective method while others are opposed to this and believe that education is the better way. In my opinion, criminals should be educated and not penalized if we want reduction in crimes.

Rehabilitation of people who are involved in illegal activities can improve their lives in many ways. They can learn how to live their life properly and become upstanding members of society again. Seemingly, most people reoffend because society does not accept them and that is the prime reason that they indulge in wrongdoings again. Education can enable them to differentiate between right and wrong and they can learn moral values. In Switzerland, for example, the crime rate is almost zero because wrongdoers are not imprisoned there and instead, they are asked to serve in NGOs for a reasonable period.

Another reason that sending perpetrators to prison is not the right approach is that they would not learn anything in prison except for new ways of illicit acts. They would meet other criminals and may learn some new ideas of crime. They would wait to complete their term in jail so that they can commit crime again once they are released. As a result, chances of committing crime again may increase significantly. More than 1,000 people, for instance, were involved in horrendous crimes in 2017 in Kenya. According to police, almost all of them had completed their terms in jails before.

In conclusion, while many people argue that sending criminals to prison is the better approach, I believe that rehabilitating wrongdoers can reduce the crime substantially. This is because they can be educated properly about how they can improve their life and they would learn other methods of crimes if put in jail.
