IELTS writing task 2

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause severe social problems as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

My answer

Nowadays, more and more people choose to live in a foreign country. Without the help of their mother language, people may face various problems, especially social and practical ones. I completely agree with this statement.

Using foreign language that is unfamiliar to them, people may find it much more difficult to express themselves. Once failing to make themselves understood, they may feel depressed and simply choose to lock themselves, unwilling to make friends with foreigners, which will lead to a feeling of loneliness and even depression. In addition, unable to accomplish things that can be easily achieved in their mother language, they would lose their confidence, which in turn would prevent themselves from trying to talk with foreigners.

Apart from above social problems, it is really inconvenient to live in a country where you cannot use your mother language, because language is useful for our daily life. For example, when you need to rent a house, it will take longer time to negotiate with house-owner using foreign languages, and sometimes you may even misunderstand what he/she is talking, which may cause practical problems in the future. You may also get misunderstood by others when you speak in a foreign language.

In conclusion, people may feel lonely and even depressed when using a foreign language can not help them express themselves and become less confident when failing to use it well. Living in a country using a foreign language will also cause practical problems, such as time consuming, money waste and misunderstanding.

You barely meet the minimum word count. Next time, write one or two more sentences to be safe.
