Hi

Cheating in Examination

Examinations are deemed to be very important in schools and universities, for they determine a student’s promotion to the next higher class. So, cheating in examinations is viewed seriously. Those caught cheating are punished with rustication ranging from six months to even five years. Despite this, students continue to cheat in examinations. Research proves that students do that due to various reasons.

First, students cheat in examination to avoid being reprimanded by parents. Most parents consider good grades are indicators of intelligence. In his study, Educator Dr. Robert Wallace concluded “parental pressure to get good grades is the major reason students cheat”. Studies prove that parents’ high expectation is to such a level that it gives children performance anxiety. While high-achieving students are able to meet their parents’ expectations or at least achieve a reasonable mark, the average and below average performers copy to secure good grades.

Another reason is that teachers tell students good grades will enable them to get admission in premier institutions. This puts the low-achieving students under severe pressure. Lecturer in School Education and author of Doing School, Denise Clark Pope says “Students feel the most important thing they do is get the grade by hook or crook”. In some schools, students are permitted to continue to study a subject not based on their interest but the grades they have secured in that subject. This forces the below-average performers to use shortcuts to boost their grades.

Finally, cheating in examination is also due to peer pressure. Research conducted in many parts of the world conclude that students think unless they get good grades they will be mocked at by their high–achieving peers. Studies prove that adolescents are very much influenced by the peers and apparently they identify with those peers who have similar interests. If peers in the peer group decide to use stealthy ways to increase their grades, they do think of doing the same thing

In conclusion, it is important to note that while cheating in examinations can never be tolerated, parents and educational institutions should study the causes and take suitable measures.

I speak American English, and you have used British English terms that are unfamiliar to me. It would be better for one of our Brits to review it.

Examinations are deemed to be very important in schools and universities, for they determine a student’s promotion preparedness to progress to the next higher class. So, cheating in examinations is viewed seriously. Those caught cheating are punished with being put on probation rustication ranging from six months to even five years. It becomes part of their record.) Despite this, students continue to cheat in examinations. Research proves that students do that for due to various reasons.

On a personal note, I "cheated" when I was in grade 3 but for none of the reasons you have cited.

My bad! Repetition at many places. I will be more careful.

AlpheccaStarsthey do think of doing the same thing, namely, conspire to cheat.

Here, do we really "namely, conspire to cheat"?

Is that understood?

I understand. In fact I have not many other major reasons, let alone minor ones.

Promotion is used in a work context ( jobs), when you are rewarded by a change from a junior position to a senior position. I got several promotions over the past five years. I am due for a promotion.

Advancement is used for school; e.g. to advance to the next higher grade level. In universities and colleges, courses are often numbered in a way to show levels and prerequisite relationships. For example, English 100, English 101, English 102

Jane, Dick, Harry and Joe are close friends. Jane is good in Maths. Dick is passionate about history, and Joe is the star footballer. So Jane says," Joe, sit next to me when we take the next Math exam, and I will slip you some answers. But you have to invite me to the school dance. " Jane hates history, so Dick says to her "I'll send you my history essay from last year. I got a grade of 95%. You can use it for this next assignment." (You get the idea?)

That is "conspire to cheat"!

Yes.

While each peer may think of doing something depending on her/his need, in my essay, I mean all of them are conspiring to cheat.

It takes more than one to make a conspiracy...

Individuals on their own can decide to cheat. That is not a conspiracy.

in my opinion, the indoor activity I lkie most is swimming. Every time I

do this activity, I feel comfortable and can forget about pressure. Swimming not only keeps my body fit but also give me a good routine. The more you swim, the more benefits you receive. That is why I have a passion for swimming. I do not know for sure about the last time I went swim . Maybe it was 2 months ago.
