More and more city workers are deciding to live in the country and travel into work every day. The result is increased traffic congestion and damage to the environment. What measures do you think could be taken to encourage people not to travel such long distances into work?

Many people are moving out of big cities into the countryside to live to escape from city problems. This is causing issues relating to traffic jams and environmental impact. I believe the following measures can address this concern.

One solution to reduce traffic congestion is to develop better road infrastructure in the countryside. More money could be spent on enlarging the roads and traffic facilities. If wider roads can be built, with more bridges and highways connecting places throughout the rural area with the cities, then there will be fewer traffic problems each day. In addition, the traffic office can fix this problem by improving rush-hour traffic systems. To exemplify this, at the same time, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings can be established to allow for shorter waiting times throughout the busy hours of each day. Together, these changes will help improve the traffic flow.

A very different way to tackle the environmental problem would use public transportation instead of private ones. People could then still live in the countryside and enjoy going to work together. Therefore, the government should introduce incentives for the usage of public transport, such as discounted rates or monthly vouchers which would entice them to use more. Another step is to encourage workers to spend part of their working week at home, perhaps two days, and then to go to work on the other days. This is happening more and more in many parts of the world. Consequently, the emission of carbon dioxide released from fuel engines will reduce significantly.

In conclusion, improvement in road infrastructure and peak hour systems or an increase in the number of people traveling by public transportation or working at home are productive ways to overcome the situation.
