Is the mental strength important for success in sports or is it more important to have strong and fit people in sports. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

My essay:

Nowadays, sports are more and more chosen as the career option of young people. While many are of the belief that strength and fitness are the secret contributing to the success in this career, others believe mental toughness is more critical. I tend to agree with the latter view.

On the one hand, many argue those who are strong and fit have the ability to accomplish great achievements in sports. First, the stronger a person is, the more force they can apply in the body, which means that they can jump higher, run faster, throw or punch harder. As all sports, such as marathon, basketball and martial arts, necessitate one or more of those general skills, athletes with stronger physics have high chance to outperform their weaker competitors. Second, people with great physically strength can more easily withstand the force against their body when playing sports. In particular, their muscular are strong and less likely to teared and strains, and their high density bones are not easy to break. This reduces the risk of injury.

On the other hand, others see mental strength as a more critical factor when came to sports success. They argue that sports are very competitive, and sportspeople constantly face great pressure to perform well during competition. Athletes are also stressed by the scrutiny from the public and press. These can take a detrimental toll on their mental health. In fact, some athletes, e.g professional wrestler Ronda Rousey, even contemplated suicide following their loss. If sporspeole are mentally strong, they can give their best ability when performing regardless of the circumstance and combat the mental exhaustion from having to practice daily, which lead to a longer active career time.

Since sports is physical demanding, athletes have to be strong and fit in order to compete with other competitors. But it the ability of mental toughness to deal with the stressful and pressure environment of sports is truly the key contributor to success.
