Hi! I'm translating a book, and I met these expressions, which I really dont understand Emotion: sad

So, I actually need help with those! If you can explain theirs meaning, I would be very very grateful to you!!

Here they are (I'm underlining them):

1). She was holding a lager and black.

2). Them what has, gets.

3). I got an A3 for my essay. (I know that A means the highest mark, but what does mean A3?)

4). Take a self-urging breath.

5). to be consumed by fire.

6). purple pop singers.

7). steep in spitiruality

8). If they could hang, they could trip on it (This is a line from the song "Alphabet Street" by Prince, but I cant get what does it mean)

9). Def me out.

10). He had more than enough time to make one hell of a night out of it.

3). I got an A3 for my essay. (I know that A means the highest mark, but what does mean A3?)

Without knowing the grading system it isn't possible to say for sure. Many places in New Zealand use A-, A, A+ ... maybe the place in the book uses A1, A2, A3 instead of the +/- system?

8). If they could hang, they could trip on it (This is a line from the song "Alphabet Street" by Prince, but I cant get what does it mean)

The lyrics can be found here: http://www.lyricsdepot.com/prince/alphabet-street.html

>If U can hang, U can trip on it
>U surely won't fall (Put your love down)
>No side effects and
>The feeling last 4-ever
>Straight up - it tastes good

I am assuming he uses "hang" here like "hang out" (to be in the company of someone). "Trip on it" is a comparison with drugs, and as the song is about sex/love it appears to be saying about "tripping" (being 'high') on this, that there are "no side effects" and "the feeling lasts forever."

Hello Eline!

I'll try my best...

  1. black - type of dark beer. Do you know Monteith's Black?

  2. them what has, gets - informal style. "Those people who have things, get things"

  3. ---?

  4. self-urging - gives you confidence; helps you do something

  5. consumed by fire - completely surrounded by fire; completely burned by fire

  6. umm a pop singer who is purple?

  7. steep in spirituality - (perhaps STEEPED...?) - spirituality is an important part

  8. ---? (need to listen to the whole song)

  9. def me out - "I'm definitely out" = I'm not involved / I won't be involved. (count me out)

  10. make one hell of a night of it - make it a very good night. "one hell of a..." = unique / very good / very bad / interesting etc.
Sorry I couldn't help more with 3,6,8. Perhaps some other teacher knows these expressions.
