Hi teachers,

I don't understand the structure of this sentence in bold type below, could you please help me understand it ? :

When I found out my wife had petitioned to donate her body to the Medical College after death without talking to me first, I was in shock. Then anger overwhelmed me and I ranted and raved at her strange behaviour. I mean, what husband would be pleased to hear such news? I’m not one of those abusive types who hate their better halves for whatever reason.

Thank you in advance

Hi,

what husband would be pleased to hear such news?

'What' is an interogative adjective here.

ie Tell me the identity of a husband who would be pleased to hear such news?

It's a rhetorical question, where the speaker expects no answer but thinks that the only possible answer would be 'No husband would be pleased to hear . . '

In other words, it's an emphatic way of saying 'No husband would be pleased to hear . . '

Best wishes, Clive
