Hi

Would you say that pontificate and buttonhole are common in everyday English? Are they informal words?

buttonhole = attract the attention of and detain (someone) in conversation, typically against their will.

Pontificate = express one's opinions in a pompous and dogmatic way.

Thanks,

Tom

These are both of rather high register. They would be out of place in everyday conversation, but don't let that stop you.

This is unfamiliar in the UK. Pontificate is used sometimes.
