I am having a hard time distinguishing predicate nominatives, predicate adjectives, and object of preposition. I need a couple good examples and good ways to determine if it is a Predicate nominative, predicate adjective, or object of prepoistion.

Thanks,
Mark K.

Uh yeah.... so a predicate noun follows a linking verb and defines or renames the subject.

Predicate adjectives and nominatives ALWAYS follow a linking verbs, are never adverbs, are never in a prepositional phrase, and are complete verbs.

Predicate Nominatives set it equal to itself and rename the subject... For example: "The President of the U.S. is a man." President = man

Predicate Adjectives describe the subject in more detail... For example: "The actor in the movie is ugly." *Ugly is the adj.*

More examples:

1) The artist is my uncle. (the bold "is" is the linking verb, and "my uncle" is the predicate nom.)

2)The artist is talented. (the bold "is" is the linking verb, and "talented" is the predicate adj.)

3)Painting is one of the oldest arts. (the bold "is" is the linking verb, and "one" is the predicate nom.)

4)Michelangelo was an artistic genius. (the bold "was" is the linking verb, and "genius" is the predicate adj.)

What if you have a sentence like this:
Below the sink is a drawing board.
I know below the sink is the prepsitional phrase, what is the verb and subject; is there a preticate nominative or adjective, or direct object

I am struggling with these sentences.

Why are you angry? (what is angry? Pred nom or Pred adj)
That game is easy to play? (what is easy) Is easy a predicate adj?
You are very clever? Is clever a predicate adjective?

Grammar is not my strong suit Emotion: sad
This is so hard. I have a test I took and we all got to retake it and I am still having trouble. one of the sentences is:
this award is quite important to me.
It says underline the linking verb and label the predicate adj. Or predicate noun above the correct word. HELP!

This award is quite important to me.

The linking verb is is; it links the subject this award to the predicate, in full the adjective phrase quite important to me. So the predicative adjective is important, that is the property of being important is ascribed to this award.

To complete the analysis, the preposition phrase to me is complement to important.

I see the verb phrase is quite important to me as the predicate, and quite important to me as the predicative complement. (Maybe that's what you meant to say.)
