I talked to him yesterday and he displayed firm belief in the claim that Americans are/were superior in a moral sense. Which one would be correct? I'm leaning towards "are" since that's a general claim or some sort of notion in the world and is still true. On the other hand, maybe we can just apply the rule of tense agreement and use "were"? But then again, the fact that it was yesterday kind of makes it sound odd to my ears. I guess I'd use "were" for sure if this event had happened, say, 10 years ago or something. Can someone confirm or deny my suspicions?

As you obviously know, there are arguments supporting each side.

Both are acceptable. It's your choice.
