In the word "asked", is the letter "k" silent"?

No, but it is passed over "unreleased". It sounds like a microsecond of silence where the "k" is. You form the "k" in your mouth, but it acts more like an impediment toward reaching the "t" sound at the end — just a sort of stutter or soft click in your mouth which is created by a tightening the back of your mouth as if you were going to pronounce the "k" fully — although you don't. When some people say "asked", the "k" is so muted that it seems it has not been pronounced at all, even when it has.

It is not correct to pronounce "asked" to rhyme with "fast".
