He got on the up escalator. Seconds later, something grabbed his pants cuff. He pulled his cuff free. What was that, he wondered.

Can anyone please explain what "He pulled his cuff free" means? Thanks.

Seconds later, something grabbed his pants cuff.

He pulled his cuff free. He pulled his pants cuff away from whatever had grabbed it.


Consider this example.

The policeman grabbed the criminal's arm, but the criminal pulled arm free and ran away.
