Hey

What does the expression to put the old horse down mean ??

It's taken from thix text :

I need some sleep.
You can’t go on like this.
I try counting sheep,
But there’s one I always miss.
Everyone says, "I’m getting down too low"
Everyone says, "You just gotta let it go"
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
I need some sleep
time to put the old horse down
I’m in too deep
and the wheels keep spinning round
Everyone says, "I’m getting down too low"
Everyone says, "You just gotta let it go"
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

Hi,

To put a horse down means to kill it, eg If it has a badly broken leg.

On the other hand, some people say 'I put the baby down', meaning 'I put the baby in bed to sleep'.

So, the meaning in the lines you quote could possibly be either.

I need some sleep
time to put the old horse down
I’m in too deep

Best wishes, Clive
From the context- may it mean "to finish with all of this"? (he is very tired with this love ...)

Hi,

Possibly.

Clive
Hi, perhaps in this context, "to put the old horse down", means someting like "give something up".

Stop doing something with the purpose of resting physically and mentally.

Best wishes.

Horse is also a slang term for Heroin. I'd assumed that this text was drug related

Clive, found your post while trying to figure out the meaning of the sentence in the Eels lyrics Emotion: smile good to know that you were there too !!!

good to know that you were there too !!!
Not exactly sure if its good. Wish I wasn't looking for this answer now, I used to think this song was really about sleeping...
All the best to those who need some sleep too.
When somebody says thas has to put a horse down they're meaning that have to kill it for mercy.
When a horse is suffering so much and it's gonna die for sure the most human is "put it down" to avoid it more suffering.
If we check the lyrics of the song, we can notice that it's about someone who is very depressed and people advise him that just have to let it go.
Its a very connotative song but my interpretation is that the problem that is taking off his sleep is so old and painful that the best is cutting off from the roots even thought if that means his dead (metaphoricly of course)
I hope I been helpful.
