Hello teacher.,

Yesterday I completed lunch and was on the on the way to pathology lab. I had some practical work in pathology lab. There I spoke to a lady senior lab assistant. I said - Good afternoon Mrs. Ancy madam. She bacame angry and asked me not to say Mrs. Ancy but only Ms. Ancy. Actually she got married and have 2 children. I want to know what is wrong if I say Mrs. Ancy? How can Ms is used for a lady who got married? Is it ego problem with her or headstrongness? I havenot understood her feeling. Please help me with your views.

Ms, Mrs and Miss are at the discretion of the woman addressed. Some women like their marital status to be acknowledged and prefer Mrs or Miss. Other women do not want their marital status to be acknowledged and prefer Ms. Your responsibility is to address a woman as Ms unless she indicates otherwise.

In any case, you would not address a woman as 'Ms/Mrs/Ms...madam'. Do not use 'madam' except to strangers whose name you do not know.
