Dear all,

Kindly tell me which of the following expressions are grammatical.

1. There is an apple and an orange on the table.

2. There are an apple and an orange on the table.

Thank you.

Both are accepted.

When a compound subject follows the verb and the first element is singular, the verb may be either singular or plural:

There is a dog and a few cats in the house.
There are a dog and a few cats in the house.
There is a dog and a cat in the house.
There are a dog and a cat in the house.

Thanks a lot CJ sir.
