Hi teachers.

I am wondering if the new black is the most common expression for something popular and new.

I know I can use fads for something poplular for a short period of time.

Can 'HOT' be used for something popular?

I will be looking forward to your suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

It is fairly common but far from the most common. The expression comes from the fashion world. The color black is the most basic and neutral color. Everything goes with it. But you get tired of the same old thing, so a cutting-edge designer might try to convince us that orange is the new black—risibly to the uninitiated.

You have to be careful, though. You can't say that something is the new black unless it is a variation on an established thing. The new black is not a fad or a trend. It is not the latest popular thing. A good example of proper usage is what a comedian said not long ago, that buttcrack is the new cleavage.

Yes.

I really appreciate your help.
