Hi.
1. I think the symbol (Is it a symbol anyway?) 'i.e.' stands for 'that is'. Can you check if these are correct. To put it crudely, do you think it is a good practice to use it in places where the phrase 'that is' could be used?

I think the best thing you can do for these people is to help them to help themselves, i.e., teach them how to do learn rather than your giving them facts and numbers.

He has a difficulty that is hard to talk about, i.e., personal in nature.

2. When you end the sentence with the symbol (Is that a symbol anyway?) with 'etc.' do you have to follow it up with a few more dots?

You might consider bringing something to write on and with like pens, pencils, etc.
I need almost everything like food, clothes, etc.

Hi,

1. I think the symbol (Is it a symbol anyway? It's an abbreviation, of a Latin phrase) 'i.e.' stands for 'that is'. Yes, that's the general idea.

Can you check if these are correct. To put it crudely, do you think it is a good practice to use it in places where the phrase 'that is' could be used? I wouldn't use it in a college essay.

I think the best thing you can do for these people is to help them to help themselves, i.e., teach them how to do learn rather than your giving give them facts and numbers. The comma following it is commonly omitted.

He has a difficulty that is hard to talk about, i.e., personal in nature.

2. When you end the sentence with the symbol (Is that a symbol anyway?Again it's an abbreviation of a Latin phrase) with 'etc.' do you have to follow it up with a few more dots? No, definitely not.

You might consider bringing something to write on and with like paper, pens, pencils, etc.
I need almost everything like food, clothes, etc.

If you say 'like', it indicates that you also need things other than the examples you mention, so you don't need to include 'etc'., which also means 'and other things'. In other words, if you say both 'like' and 'etc.', you are saying the same thing twice.
I suggest either this
I need things like food and clothes.
or this
I need food, clothes, etc.

Best wishes, Clive
