Hi, questions are listed below in red. Thanks a lot for your time! Osee

Rachel: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in the room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Limoges gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (to the waitress that brought her coffee)Sweet 'n' Lo? (Q: Why there were laugthers in the background after Rachel said this line?)- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry!(Q: what does it mean by turned on used here?) And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me(Q: why is "hit" used here?): how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head(Q:What's this phrase mean?). Y'know, I mean, I always knew he looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering 'Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?'. (to Monica) So anyway I just didn't know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you're the only person I knew who lived here in the city.

1) the laughter is because the interuption comes just at the exciting part. It's not real laughter - it's known as 'canned laughter' that the producers add to stress parts that are supposed to be funny. Often they're not funny at all.

2) 'turned on' means get excited - usually sexually.

3) "That's when it hit me" is an idiom meaning 'that's when I realised'.

4) Mr Potato head is a children's toy/cartoon. Here's a picture - Mr Potato Head is on the right:

Hi Tidus, thanks a lot for your help. The picture is great and funny!

BTW, why gravy boat turned on Rachel sexually?

Hi,

Come on, are you telling me that females where you live do not get sexually excited by gravy boats? That's hard to believe.Emotion: wink

I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry!

why gravy boat turned on Rachel sexually?

The gravy boat did not turn her on at all. Yet she says that it turned her on more than Barry. In other words, he had less sex appeal than a gravy boat, less sex appeal than 'none'. She is speaking with irony. It's meant to be a funny remark.

Best wishes, Clive
Hi Clive,

I know it is a irony remark. But I understand gravy boats are just utensils used in kitchen for hold soy sauce, how does it make females get sexually excited in any degree? Does this have anything to do with some culture or history or just the shape of gravy boats (looking like something of a male Emotion: wink)? I totally have no idea about what gravy boats look like.

Hi,

It's just a joke. There is nothing sexually exciting about a gravy boat.

It's like saying that a brick has more intelligence than Tom. What this really means is that Tom has absolutely no intelligence.

(Q: Why there was laughter in the background after Rachel said this line?)
The reason they laughed when she asked if it was "Sweet 'n Low" was because it is a very silly thing to stress about when you have just run away from your own wedding!
(Q: what does it mean by turned on used here?)
She was more sexually attracted to the gravy boat than to her Soon-To-Be husband, this simply explains that she holds no attraction for Barry.
(Q: why is "hit" used here?)
It is an expression that comes from when people say things like 'You won't know a fist if it hit you in the face'. (Thats just an example.
(Q:What's this phrase mean?)
Mr. Potato Head is a character from Toy Story.
