Dear teachers

A: You might have to click in the upper left-hand corner of the text-area to make your typing cursor appear.

Can I replace in the upper left-hand corner with at the upper left -hand corner? If not, why?

B: I remember there was this sign in his office that said PAINLESS DENTIST, UPSTAIRS.

Can I replace said with read? If not, why? I'm often confused as to when to use read or say when it comes to signs, titles, etc.

Thanks for your detailed explanation.

A: We say "in" or "on" with corners. "At" is not such a precise position.

B: "Said" or "read" is the same here. The sign said this, in the sense that this is what it announced, or it read this, in the sense that this is what people could read.
