Assessment is a process by which information is obtained relative to some known objective or goal.

What does relative to mean in this sentence, please?

relative to = about?

Thanks.

This is not the greatest sentence ever written, in my opinion. Nevertheless, "relative to" refers to a comparison: the assessment information is compared to the objective, to see whether or not the objective is met.

Pretty much. It's another way of saying "relating to", "having application to".
