I'll try to make this point clear.

But first of all, I'd like to say that I am sure that this point has nothing to do with progress in the modern world.

Now let me shed light on the matter according to my humble knowledge:

  1. Man has the leading rule in the family. A muslim man is commanded to respect the religion of his wife (either a Christian or a Jewish woman) and let her practice it. On the other hand if he is a non-muslim and she is, Islam is not sure that he is going to let her muslim woman practice her religion.

  2. Most likely the children of such a marriage (a non-muslim man and a muslim woman) are going to follow the religion of their father by birth which is unacceptable in Islam.

  3. Verses in Quran and many sayings by the prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) and incidents in his time assure this matter. As Muslims, we should believe in the authenticity of these two sources (Quran and Hadeeth) and Islam is not merely a set of beliefs. those beliefs should be accompanied with actions . So it is not a tradition or something like that. In chapter two verse 221 and chapter 16 verse 10, verses handle this matter. Reading these verses should go along with reading their explanations and the circumstances of the time of their revelations seeking for better understanding.
Hope you got the point. Emotion: smile

Thank you for your kind reply... I thought Quran did not mention that it is forbidden to marry a christian or Jewish man with a moslem woman. But it mainly forbids a moslem woman to marry a non believer.. Also, what if this christian husband or jewish husband is tolerant enough to let his moslem wife to practice her own beliefs?

Thank you for your clarification,

cheers!
Grammar GeekI wonder how that works if the child is adopted?

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for your reply... I understand your point of view and it seems like common sense. However, I also seen some families with inter-faith marriages and kids are brought up in both faiths and then when they are older, they get to choose which faith to follow...

Take care,
I think these typical rules are for those women who live in a very conservative society and economically dependent .For educated and self dependent women rules are same in all religion.I have seen muslim woman marrying hindu man.

not really, the religion says that she is not allowed to but it's her choice to follow it or not(it's like as all religions ppl shouldn't steal though many ppl does), whatever their society was and it depends on how religious this woman was, that's it! but remember she is not allowed to! it's not the deal of society
we don't expect that all muslim women are religous and that all of them will follow theri religion strictly (just as any other religion)

in fact i believe that also a man cannot marry a christian or a jew but ppl think that men can cuz once the prophet Mohammad married a chrristian ,but she didn't keep her riligion, she became muslim before the marriage, ppl don't notice the fact that she was a chtistian not she is a christian but i guess both are not allowed to moreover i guess ppl focus on the woman part that she is not allowed to cuz she'll be having children of another religion therefore scholars focused about the women issue more
