As the accessibility of technology to the public increases inexorably in recent years, robots have emerged as a topic of interest. It is argued that robots are fundamental to human life. While this thinking is valid to a certain extent, I believe that the use of robots would have an adverse bearing on both users and society.
There are many compelling reasons why people should utilize robots. On the individual level, robot users will stand a better chance of dispensing with inconsistent and exhaustible physical toil, which helps people take care of tedious daily tasks and free up their time for more recreational activities and more important priorities. On the societal level, a surge in the gross manufacturing rate, prompted by automated machines and processes, will raise the economic productivity. This may acts as a precursor to a thriving economy.
However, despite the aforementioned benefits, I would contend that the advancement of robotics technologies, in fact, can do both the beneficiaries and society a disservice. Today, the job security of humans is questionable at best due to automation. The job market has become competitive as it is. Therefore, if every labor-intensive tasks are performed by machines, it is no longer feasible for workers to find a job, let alone earn their livelihood. In addition to this, the enormous cost incurred to cover fees related to robots like cyberattacks, viruses will put a strain on government coffers, leading to budget deficits, tax hikes, or reduced welfare among others.
In conclusion, while the potential benefits of the robots make it seem like a good idea, I believe that it is imperiling our livelihood, imperiling our health, and possibly wreaking havoc on future societies.
