Hi

We suffered the rough end of UK guesthouse accommodation.

--- Does it just mean that they suffered because the accommodation in English guesthouses was poor? Maybe "rough end" changes something?

Thanks

Approximately so. I'd say the expression implies that there's also a smooth end. That is, although the writer had bad luck with his accomodations, it should come as no surprise.
