what is the difference between the usage of "sample" and "example" ?

A sample is often a physical thing. I can produce a sample of the items I want to sell you. The other things that I produce should be just like that one.

An example is one thing that fits a category. There may be many, many others that also fit that category.

Hi,

what is the difference between the usage of "sample" and "example" ?

Let me offer a couple of scenarios to show one way in which these words are often used.

Scenario one A salesman visits a store manager and says 'I want to sell you 500 sweaters. Here is a sample'. The sweater he shows the store manager is one of the 500 he wants to sell.

Scenario two A salesman visits a store manager. The manager puts a sweater on the table and says 'Can you make 500 sweaters for me that look like this example?' The sweater he shows the saleman is not one of the 500 he wants to buy. It merely illustrates what he wants.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi

Should it be sample sentences or example sentences?

In dictionaries, sentences are often provided besides the meaning/s of the word.

Many thanks.

Use the term 'example'. However, it's a noun and not an adjective, so use the correct grammar if it's in a sentence.

eg Here is a sentence as an example.
