We are hosting a student from South Korean who would like to learn English. We are looking for a good school for her to learn conversational English. She will be staying with us in Vancouver for about 3 to 5 months and is looking for a good full time English course. I have heard about a few schools and courses for ESL students but would like to hear some recommendations from others. We would prefer a school with a good student to teacher ratio and one that has a good reputation for teaching conversational English successfully. In the Greater Vancouver area which schools are considered the best for ESL?
Thank you for any recommendations,

Mike

How old is the student?
Is the student only with you to
learn English, not keeping
up with other subject areas?
Depending where you live, the student might do
best at a nearby public school.
Younger students learn as much of a
foreign language informally as formally
because of peer group interaction.

Thanks John for your reply,
Our student is 29 and is mainly interested in English. Eventually she would like to teach English back home in South Korea. We have thought about UBC and King George International College. King George College seems to have a high student/teacher ratio however, and so we are looking for something different. Any ideas? I wonder if SFU or BCIT have good ESL programs?
Thanks John,

Mike

Local universities/colleges may have intensive programs that would suit your student but most, I suspect,
have their students take a class of English as
only part of the student's timetable.
You should check with local school boards or
cultural centres that offer the LINC program
(Language Instruction New Canadians)
Fulltime LINC students get about 5 - 6 hours
a day of ESL in an Adult Education environment.
Technically LINC is for immigrants but you may
be able to enrol your student for a fee that's
less than a university.
A good LINC program will have several classes
at differing levels, an initial placement
based on the student's English skills,
and flexibility in reassigning the student
to a higher or lower level if need be.
Oops!
I just did a websearch and LINC is called ELSA
in BC.
In BC LINC means Long Term Inmates Now (in)
Community - not the sort of program you want
your student enrolled in -:)
Do a websearch for elsa bc and you'll
get all sorts of info.

Thanks for all this info John. I will look into this. From what you describe this looks very appropriate to what I am looking for.
Thank you very much John for this helpful advice,

John, the links on the ELSA site where very helpful. I found a catalogue of all the ESL courses in BC. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction,

Mike
