Hi teachers,

"In addition to experiencing health problems, these children will struggle in their attachments to other people, language development and in their capacity for self-regulation, and in many other areas, Goldman said"

In the above sentence - I'm trying to help myself see the sentence clearly by breaking it down - Does the original sentence mean:

In additon to experiencing health problems, these children will struggle in thier attachments to other people; these chilren will struggle in language develpment; these children will struggle in their capacity for self-rgulation; and these children will struggle in many other areas.

Thanks

There are a number of ways to handle the 'in's; here is mine:

I copied the sentence from a newspaper last year. It is a comment by a doctor about five children who had been inhumanly abused over more than a decade. He said that the children, who had been through psychological and physical traumas, would struggle in a number of areas aside from their health problems: in their interpersonal attachments, their language development, their self-regulatory ability, and in many other other areas.

1. HSBC sent out to their first-time cardholders a letter of advisement with PIN activation information.

2. First-time cardholders are advised to bring their ATM cards and letter of advisement to an ATM machine for PIN activation.

Yes, that's right.

I am not sure of the context you tried to engage. But "struggle" is usually used with "with". i.e. John is struggling with the decision whether he should quit his job to start his own business. "Struggle with" means having a difficult time making up one's mind or deciding.
Hi Mister Micawber,

May I ask if "in" in all sentences are necessary? And if yes, does it refer to "in the aspect of"

Thanks

Hi Goodman,

I wrote this down from a newspaper last year. "These children have been through a horrible trauma, so I think the doctor is trying to say they'd probably be facing issues like what I mentioned in last post" Yes. I think I have trouble with "in" used in the original sentence.

Thanks

I will not analyze your second, 'explanatory' sentence, as I presume that you created it only to clarify the meaning of the original sentence for yourself. It is not a good sentence.

However, 'in' here essentially = 'with', 'with regard to'. 'In the aspect of' is not a particularly clear formation either.

Hi Mister Micawber,

Analysing all aside, could I try again and could you correct the grammatical errors in the revised sentence?

I took the sentence down from a newspaper last year about the comment made by a doctor on five children being inhumanly abused over in more than a decade. He said that the children, who had been through psychological and physical traumas over in more than a decade, would struggle in a number of areas aside from their health problems, such as, their attachments to other people, language development, their capability for self-regulation, and in many other areas else.

Thank you.

Dear Mister Micawber,

I have yet another question on "plural' and "singular" being treated in this sentence.

Why "attachments"? And "ability" and not "abilities"?

Would you say the following correct? Thanks

The bank has sent all first time individual card holders an advising letter.

First time card holders should bring their ATM cards with the advising letter to the bank.

First time card holders should bring their ATM cards with advising letters to the bank.

First time card holders should bring their ATM card with (their) advising letter to the bank.

Individual card holders should bring their ATM cards with the advising letter to the bank.

Individual card holders should bring their ATM card with the advising letter to the bank.

It's kind of long, I apologize.

Thank you very much for your help.
