Hi,

The Archbishop took our service of thanksgiving.

'Thanksgiving' in N. America refers to a particular day when Christian people give thanks to God for their blessings. It originates from a celebration for a good harvest.

In a religious context, 'to take a service' means 'to conduct/lead a service'.

The Archbishop took our Thanksgiving service is more natural. However, you'd have to be a pretty important bunch of people to have an important priest like an Archbishop conduct your service.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi Gary

Your sentence refers to a religious ceremony (service). The ceremony was one during which thanks were offered (given).

Thank you Clive and Yankee.

The Archbishop took our service of thanksgiving.

Now, I can understand this sentence, "We want to give thanks to God and since we can't give it by ourself, we approached Archbishop as they can speak to God, so the Archbishop said our thanks to God on our behalf".

I know I may be wrong, but that's what I understand.

Please help me.
Hi,

Approximately, yes.Emotion: smile

I don't see it in quite that way, no. You make it sound as though the people themselves don't do anything.

The Archbishop led the ceremony of thanksgiving that the people attended.

We can give thanks to God because Jesus Christ has opened up access to God the Father. We don't NEED an archbishop or a priest or pastor to speak to God for us. Any believer in Jesus can speak to God in prayer and thanksgiving (giving thanks). God does place individuals in a group of Christians to lead them in worship (such as a service of thanksgiving) and this individual is there to provide order for the service and clarification on Biblical teachings.
