1. The English team sent the German team crashing out of the world cup.

2. His actions set me thinking.
Is the "crashing" in the first sentence an example of participle acting as an adverb. If so ,which verb is it modifying ?
In the second sentence what is the function of "thinking" ? Is it a gerund ?

Yes, I'd say so.

Find the only verb in the sentence and that will be it!

I'd say this one is also a participial adverb. It's not a gerund.

The only verb in the sentence is "sent", but it seems that "crashing" describes the way the German team went out rather than the way the English team sent them out.
