In everyday use I don't think there is a formal meaning for these so I'll give you my understanding.
Showers: when I hear this on a weather forecast I take it to mean that there will be rain throughout the day but that it will not be continuous.
Rain: continuous throughout the period the forecaster is talking about.
Sprinkles: very light rain
There is a disgreement about rain and showers.

But according to what the three fabulous experts said here,

may I understand basically rain and showers have the same strength

except that showers do not last a long time. Thanks a lot.
