Let's say I went to bed at 9pm (which is considered early) but didn't sleep until midnight (considered late).

I would say
I went to bed early but didn't fall asleep until midnight.

My question is, can I simplify the above and say the following to focus on just the latter, not revealing the former piece of information?

I slept late yesterday.

Thanks.

You would say: "I went to sleep late yesterday."

"I slept late" means that you woke up later than you wanted to.
Two questions.

1. "I went to sleep" means I went to bed, right?
So, 'I went to sleep late" means I went to bed late which is not true. I went to bed early but I fell asleep late.

2. Does 'I slept late' mean ' I slept in'?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

1) I went to bed = I got into my bed.

2) I went to sleep = "I lost consciousness, I entered a state of sleep".

3) I fell asleep = very similar to #2.

Does 'I slept late' mean ' I slept in'? Broadly speaking, yes.

Best wishes, Clive
I am always tired the next morning if I sleep late. (incorrect)

I am always tired the next morning if I go to bed late. (correct)

Sleep late means get up in the morning later than usual; sleep in. At night, you go to bed.

I didn't go to bed until after midnight and so I slept this morning.

Hi guys,

I didn't go to bed until after midnight and so I slept this morning.

This statement sounds a lttle odd to my ear. Since almost everyone sleeps for at least part of the morning, I would interpret this to mean "I didn't get up until the afternoon'.

Is that the intended meaning?

If so, I think people would more often say something that overtly indicates 'the morning until the end', eg I didn't go to bed until after midnight and so I slept all morning.

Best wishes, Clive
By the way, this is not a new topic. It's been discussed before:
sleep late
I think Yoong Liat meant he went to bed early in the morning, sometime before dawn. Correct me if I'm wrong.
