My friend wants to write a science book. He doesn't know which software to start with to compile his book. As it's a science book it will contain a lot of pictures. There are softwares like QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign which are used for desktop publishing. I haven't used them and don't know if they will serve the purpose. Please, help.
For writing it your friend can just use Word.

IF the intention is to self-publish, then you'll have to start looking at other programs. I'd worry about getting the book written first though.
Yes, the intention is self-publish. If he writes his his book in Word then for publishing he would have to use some other programme, then there will be a lot of changes in format and page layout. Page layout and correct arrangement of pictures is very important for a science book.

Type in Word, and then convert to pdf.

I work in a book publisher and they make science books, too. In my workplace they use Corel Draw.
