well, it seems like old saying or something, is't from China ?

as for no.3 ; i think it's encouraging writing ur diary, maybe one day it can be some thing important..

as for no.1 ; well it says that it's better for men to be the unique known for a woman, even if she is not beautiful, and it's not good for him to be one of her friends even if she's beautiful ! it's so strange, old, sick word i think !
Thanks Musilimah

Nobody understands the meaning of the sentences?
So many people here ,but none can help me.

So depressed I am

So the native speakers can not understand these sentences either?

So difficult they are?

So where can I resort to?
Fisharound1. It is better to be first with an ugly woman than the hundredth with a beauty. An ugly woman is likely to find it difficult to attract a man, so she will be untouched. A beautiful woman will attract many men so is "spoiled goods"..

It's a thoroughly misogynistic aphorism.

2. Many a man has fallen in love with a girl in a light so dim he would not have chosen a suit by it. Love makes you blind. If it is not very light, then you cannot see what you are getting clearly. But that does not stop men falling in love.

3. What is a diary as a rule? A document useful to the person who keeps it , dull to the contemporary who reads it, invaluable to the student centuries afterwards who treasures it! What is difficult about this? What is generally a diary: something in which you make a record of your appointments, which is useful for you, but which will make very dull reading for your contemporary. However, for a student it contains material of great value.

4. A natural unassuming woman whom they have been doing their best to spoil by making a lioness of her. She is a nice person but "they" are making her out to be more important than she really is.

5 For all practical purposes history is, for us and for the time being, what we know it to be. History in the present is what we are experiencing now.
