Hello There.

First time user and i hope my question is relevant and in the correct topic area! I am taking A level History and revising for some source based questions, the likes of which i have never come across before. A friend suggested an acronym to me called D.A.M.I.T. which stands for Date, Author, Mode, Intended Audience, Tone. And collates all the main areas that examiners are expecting to be covered in the answer.

I was just curious as to whether anyone had heard of this or come across any other methods of source based revision? As i said i am sorry if this sort of question is unacceptable but i thought someone here may have experience of this type of thing.

It sounds like a great question. Could you explain what, exactly, it is that you're revising (I hope not History), and what is understood by "source based questions." Who is asking and who is answering and what is the source? If this would have been obvious to the person who can help you, I am not he/she. Who are the examiners?

Hello Avangi and thanks for the response.

I'm afraid it is History! Anf the exam board is Northern Ireland CCEA....we get a source based question on Germany where you get three documents either contempary or secondary that are linked and you have to answer questions about them, usually comparison questions. The acronym i was told contained all the main parts of the answer they are looking for. Hope this is of more use to you. Thanks again. Steve
There are some very talented people on the team but I can't say whether any are into the analysis or comparison of historical source documents. My son is an Irish history buff but not a scholar. I'm afraid I, personally, have no recommendation for you. (This is an English as a second language site.) I confess I'm curious as to where "revision" fits into what you've described to me.

I'm sure you'll do famously on the exams.

You and I have a certain amount in common as not only did I, too, take 'A' level History and in fact a subsequent degree in it, but I was born in N. Ireland. Emotion: big smile

I haven't heard of this D.A.M.I.T. which stands for Date, Author, Mode, Intended Audience, Tone, so I guess it depends on how much you feel you can reply on your friend's advice. Surely you must have studied various sources in your classroom work? I'd be surprised if your teacher has not given you advice in how to analyse them?

I don't know what is meant by 'mode', and the meaning of 'tone' here deserves some thought by you.

My assumption is that your 'sources' are early historians and not, for example, financial records kept by some king's Chancelor. On that assumption, here are a few other questions that seem relevant in evaluating a source.

Did the writer have first-hand knowledge of the events written about, or not?

Why did the writer write this?

What are his biases, either conscious or unconscious?

What was the original source language? eg High or Low German? Anglo-Saxon? Are you going to be looking at these in translation, or not?
