Yes, of course you can, and often do make friends if you play sports on a team. However, I think there are lots of other ways to get to know people, too: Why wouldn't you simply gather to discuss, for instance? What about going to the theatre with your friends? I personally detest sports, so I refuse to play any sports. I enjoy walking, though. It's good to play sports in that it enhances your fitness, but on the other hand, you will stay in shape also if you clean your flat often enough. I don't think you will develop your communication skills that much if you play sports. I mean, sportspeople are not usually excellent communicators, are they?

My kids are not very skilled at sports, but this year they did softball and swimming. I've been very glad for it. They are part of a team, and are learning to be supportive of the other kids (even when they make mistakes) and get support even when they make mistakes. They are learning new skills and getting at least a little exercise. They are learning that it's okay to not win, as long as you do your best. They are meeting kids they don't know from their own school. Plus, it's nice to seem them be on a team together - they can fight a lot between them - and so to see them working toward a common goal is great.
