After checking this thread (https://www.englishforums.com/English/StoryAboutAndStoryOf/bwrmzw/post.htm ), I am still confused about the difference between "story of' and "story about".

If I describe my greatest achievement in life, is my description a story of my life?

If I describe how I have grown over the past few years, is my description a story of my life?

Can you give me an example of when to use a story about my life?

No. The story of your life includes everything in your life from when you were born until now. This would be one of the following:

the story of my greatest achievement (in life)
a story from my life / a story about my life

a story about something is usually about a part or smaller aspect of that thing.
the story of something usually includes the whole thing.

I can see why the thread didn't help you. It wasn't about your question exactly. The story of my life is my biography, nothing else. There is no such thing as a story of my life. I suppose there could be a story about my life, which might be based on my life without being what you could call a real biography.

Hi CJ;

What is the difference between the story of my life and a story of my life? I understand now that the story of my life is my biography. Perhaps a story of my life suggest there are many of my biographies?

Yes, that's one way to use the expression "a story of my life".

It's possible that many historians have written your biography (if you are a very famous person). Each of these is a story of your life.

Even if you write an autobiography, you can say it's a story of your life, recognizing that others who know you might write a different version. But usually you'd say that you had written the story of your life.

Thanks for your help.

I did overstate that for sure. I was thinking of contexts like the other versions.

Also, I would like to add that "the story of my life" is also used facetiously. Someone says, "Have you noticed that every time you get in line at the supermarket, all the other lines move except yours?" You can say, "Are you kidding? That's the story of my life."
