What is the difference between substance and matter?
All substances are composed of matter.

What about this definition:

matter is solid while substance could be solid or liquid

Don't like it.
Matter is generally taken to refer to the primal physical entity, whereas a substance is taken to mean matter plus additional forms i.e. matter is the universal substance.
