Quite unfortunately, it doesn't seem that the Japanese culture suits him.

And is the article 'the' necessary here or not? It's optional. Using it suggests that the writer is thinking of specific cultures, (eg The Japanese culture doesn't suit him, but the Korean and the Thai cultures do'.

Compare 'Japanese culture doesn't suit him, but Japanese food does'.
