Hi,

Would you look and see if they are right?

He hesitated, searching for a suitable word.
He hesitated, searching for a fit word.
He hesitated, searching for an appropriate word.
He hesitated, searching for a proper word.

I feel the first, third, and the fourth are good, but I am not sure about the second.

Do you think they are the same in meaning?

Thanks very much!

I agree, SUITABLE and APPROPRIATE are best, and mean the same thing.
"a fit word" is wrong; you could say "a FITTING word" but that's not as good as SUITABLE and APPROPRIATE.
PROPER is not right either. The only words about which I would say "That's not a PROPER word" are 'words' like ALOT, OFCOURSE, etc, which are not real words.
I suggest "... searching for THE BEST word" or "... searching for THE RIGHT word".
